Rain

All the rain we've been having recently has made the trees big and green and the river big and brown...

F.O.: Light blue organic cotton sheath dress

I mentioned a while back that I have been working with some incredible cotton yarns...here is a finished product made out of one of them. After reading several articles about the effects on the environment of non organic cotton (for instance here) I have been recently trying to find new yarns that are made from sustainably grown cotton that I can use in an effort to produce items that impact as little as possible on the environment. While the durability of garments is one important aspect of sustainability (the more items last in time, the fewer you throw away and the less frequently you have to buy new ones), the way the fiber is produced is another important factor I have been turning my attention towards.
This dress for instance is made using this organic cotton yarn by Lana Grossa. This cotton is lovely to work with, soft, fresh and with a great drape to it.
As for the dress itself I wanted to make something polished but comfortable to wear, something you can wear both in an office environment or in a more formal context that is figure hugging without being too revealing or too costraining. It is comfortable and stretchy and can be worn with or without a belt depending on the desired look.
As always details on my etsy page!

Mile high reading...

A few months ago I was on a plane flying back from a quick trip in Amsterdam to see my brother and I was reading one of those airline magazines you find in the seat pouch. Don't you love those? They are usually filled with really interesting articles on a variety of subjects and most of the time they spark your wanderlust making you want to go visit all kinds of countries and places (makes sense for an airline to do that).
I was particularly intrigued by an article on Brunello Cucinelli, a designer I had heard of before but didn't really know much about. His is an extremely high end company that is famous particularly for its luxurious and sophisticated cashmere sweaters, but since it started its activity in the seventies as a company specialized in colorful cashmere sweaters, it has expanded its line to include different clothing items and accessories.

The company itself is now located in what seems to be an absolutely breathtaking medieval town in Umbria, Solomeo (see what I mean about the wanderlust thing? I want to go there now!). Brunello Cucinelli bought the XIV century castle of Solomeo in 1985 and transfered the company to this town. An important part of the philosophy of this company is a consequence of the owner's love for art and history: he invested a part of the profits of the company to restore and requalify the village and its significant historical buildings. This attention to the cultural heritage of his region is clear even just by visiting the company's website, a pleasure for the eyes filled with wonderful images of medieval frescoes and paintings.
The owner can be described as a humanist, putting his efforts into enhancing the cultural life of his hometown, (for instance through his Foundation and Amphitheatre) and guaranteeing that his workers are part of this humanist ideal of his, with wages that are higher than average and a strong attention towards their education in the Solomeo School of Craftmanship.
Read more here and here.

F.O.: Midnight blue empire waist blouse

I posted a sneek peak of this top a while ago when I was writing about the lovely cotton I was using and here is the finished product. Let me tell you, it so difficult to photograph dark colors like these, the lighting wasn't helping too much either, so it was very hard for me to capture the shape and details of this blouse. This empire waisted top has ribbing under the chest and a checkered textured stitch border at the cuffs of the sleeves, along the bottom and around the v-neck. It's very classic and versatile, it can function as a simple t-shirt or can be dressed up a bit more with statement jewellery depending on what you need...a wardrobe staple you count on for years and years!
As always, details on my etsy page!
