The elegance of garter stitch

Garter stitch is the first stitch you learn when knitting for the first time. It is the absolute simplest since you repeat the same stitch on every stitch and every row. What happens is that when you start learning how to do things that are more complex, like textured stitches, lace, cables etc. you often tend to forget about garter stitch and leave it to beginners. The truth is that garter stitch is a very versatile and useful design element since it yealds a beautiful, sturdy fabric that doesn't curl at the edges and doesn't bias even with yarns that are over-twisted.
I have neglected garter stitch for a long time, poor thing, attracted as I was by more complex stitches, but I have been noticing recently that apart from being very useful it also gives a very elegant and refined touch to garments, even if used just for small details. Since I am more of a product knitter than a process knitter I have decided to incorporate it into more of the items I make.
This is what I mean about the elegance of garter stitch:

Il legaccio è il primissimo punto che si impara quando si inizia a lavorare a maglia. Dal momento che si ripete lo stesso movimento su tutti i punti e su tutti i ferri è il più semplice in assoluto ed è quindi da lì che si comincia. Quando poi si passa a cose più complicate, come i punti alternati, il pizzo, le trecce ecc. ci si tende a dimenticarsi del legaccio e a lasciarlo ai principianti, pur essendo un punto utilissimo. Il legaccio infatti crea un tessuto spesso, stabile, che non si arriccia sui bordi e che non tende a prendere forme diagonali anche se il filato e troppo arrotolato. Ultimamente mi sono anche resa conto che a parte la sua utilità, si tratta anche di un elemento che può dare subito un tocco molto raffinato ai capi, anche se utilizzato ad esempio solo sui bordi di una maglia. L'ho trascurato per parecchio tempo, povero legaccio, lo sto rivaultando molto e ho intenzione di usarlo di più nei prossimi capi che farò.
